Lights, Camera, Action!
Open to Rising-K- 5th grade
Top Notch Theatrics will bring to life the achievements of African Americans in front of the camera, behind the scenes, and on the stage. This one-week camp will explore the contributions of groundbreakers such as Hattie McDaniel, Paul Robeson, Gregory Hines, Spike Lee, Bill Robinson, and Marsai Martin to name a few.
From the first Oscar nomination to the present domination, African Americans have fought to make sure our visual representation reflected the lives we live. GoBYK will introduce some key players who have made the way for our current actors, actresses, producers, directors and costume designers. We will also learn about plays, movies, and music that have become a mainstay in our culture. By the end of your child's GoBYK week, he/she will not only be familiar with industry greats but they will be able to tell you all about them.
As with all GoBYK camps, we will learn about the Black National Anthem, play indoor and outdoor games, and learn related quotes by notable African-Americans. But, most of all, we will have fun!
We will share with you what we've learned during our performance at the end of the week. The performance will begin on Friday at 4:00pm.
Camp will be held in the Community Building of
Log Cabin Community Church
2699 Log Cabin Dr. SE
Smyrna, GA. 30080
As parents of African American children of the 21st Century, we have continually ensured their exposure to all that we didn’t have and/or those things that we didn’t get an opportunity to experience. Sometimes we forget to provide the valuable experiences and lessons that we did get; those experiences that made us so
conscious, so active and so concerned. Inadvertently, we have not emphasized those things that made our parents and grandparents who they are and aided them in helping us become who we are- basically our history. The GoBYK Black History Camp consists of week-long programs that allow the children to nurture their sense of cultural pride through songs, stories, videos and crafts.
June 2-6, 2025, we will explore African Americans in science and work on some pretty cool science experiments ourselves. This week full of hands-on scientific exploration will allow the children to nurture their sense of cultural pride through songs, stories, videos and crafts.
The program culminates with a science fair and performance centered around the week’s studies.
The performance will begin on Friday at 4:00pm.

We know the name Jessie Owens but why should we know John Baxter Taylor? Mr Taylor was the first African American to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games in London, England as part of the medley relay team. He was preceded by George Coleman Page who was actually the first African American to win a medal in the Olympic Games. He won a bronze medal in the 200m and 400m hurdles in 1904 in St. Louis, MO.
Music has always played an important role in the history of African Americans. It has always been key to how we communicate, survive hardship, celebrate, victories, and express every emotion known to man.
Soulful sounds allows your child to explore the many styles of music, whether it be ragtime, gospel, hip-hop, or go-go. We will also investigate the samples used in today’s hits.
Do not be surprised when your camper comes home recognizing music composer Eubie Blake, singing ballads from Luther Vandross, and also dancing to “Rapper’s Delight."
We will investigate the reasons as well as the ways in which we celebrate our culture, history and achievements. How did Martin Luther King, Jr. Day become a national holiday? What is Juneteenth and where did it begin? What are some of the negro spirituals and how did gospel music enter the mainstream culture? And do you know what Dashiki Day is?
At the completion of the camp, your child will understand why we have these celebrations and traditions and how they evolved.
Let's explore what it takes to be a future millionaire or even billionaire.
We will discuss the traits and habits such as investing, saving and planning. We will be introduced to African Americans and the businesses that made them millionaires/billionaires and talk about our future careers/businesses.
Whether you are talking ballet, hip hop, tap or modern dance, there are a number of dancers and choreographers that deserve to be honored and remembered. We will revisit the likes of Gregory Hines and Katherine Dunham, but also be introduced to many more.
If asked to name 3 DJ's, you would probably immediately respond with "Spinderella, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Jam Master Jay," but are you familiar with Frankie Knuckles, DJ Hurricane, or Yvonne Daniels? Don't worry, after a couple of days of GoByk camp, your child will be able to tell you all about them.
The last area of exploration for the week is design. By now we all know Ruth Carter, the costume designer for Black Panther, however, did you know that she originally studied special education but ended up being known as "the costume girl" on campus?
GoByk began offering free online black history activities during the pandemic quarantine. Due to the children's overwhelming response to the Black History Bingo game, we decided to continue to offer this experience every first Saturday of the month through 2022.
